Is Artificial Grass Bad for the Environment?

Whilst many are quick to dismiss artificial grass as bad for the environment, there are actually several eco-friendly benefits that often go unmentioned. In this short blog we will cover some of the eco-friendly benefits to having an artificial lawn in your garden.

Low Maintenance

Arguably the biggest environmental benefit of having an artificial lawn is the lack of maintenance required throughout the year. Maintaining a natural lawn can have very harmful effects on your garden’s ecosystem. Firstly, petrol/diesel lawn-mowers produce a surprisingly high level of harmful emissions including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide. Not only do these emissions directly impact your garden’s ecosystem and health, but they also contribute to the rising levels of national and global pollution.

Herbicides and fertilisers are also often needed to maintain a natural lawn. These products pollute water, soil and the other vegetation in your garden. They can also be toxic to non-target organisms such as birds, beneficial insects and fish.

Preserves Water

Keeping your natural lawn green all year round requires significant watering. It is widely reported that less then 1% of the water on earth is fresh water available for our use, making it a far scarcer resource then is commonly believed. The process of filtering water

often requires the use of fossil fuels (a non-renewable energy source) which directly impacts our carbon footprint and is a leading contributor to global climate change. Whilst the initial installation of artificial grass requires the use of fossil fuels, no watering is required after this. Reducing both your water usage and your water bill.
